There remains the
pleasurable task of thanking
various people without whose
contribution this book either
would not have been completed
or would not contain whatever
may be clear, well illustrated,
and meritorious in it. It was
Linda Chaput, Editorial Director
of the Scientific American
Library, who suggested the idea
for this book and steered it
through the various stages of
publication. It was Jonathan
Cobb who so intelligently,
skillfully, and diplomatically
edited it, acquiring knowledge
of the field of perception along
the way in order to do so, ably
aided and abetted in the process
by Heather Wiley. It was my
friends Carl Zuckerman and
Charles S. Harris who once
again sacrificed their time and
energy to help by reading
various drafts and suggesting
revisions. It was Sylvia Rock
who typed much of the
manuscript, often under the
pressure of deadlines, and who
kept our family afloat during
the long periods when I was too
immersed in writing to be of
much use to anyone else.
